His knowledge of both Mt Etna, volcanoss, and geology more generally is truly impressive. This knowledge was on further display when Giovanni took us to an impressive lava cave.
The only downside of the tour was our inability to see some of the lower level craters due to a private citizen (not even living in Sicily from what I understand) charging a fee for a site that clearly should be accessible. The authorities should correct the problem. Otherwise, a perfect tour. read less

You could really tell that... read moreOur Sunset Tour could not be run due to weather conditions, but they rebooked us on a mid-morning tour the next day. Our guide was Monica and she was excellent. You could really tell that she has a love for the mountain and the area as a whole and with that love comes a lot of knowledge and experience.

The mountain itself was beautiful. We dressed for very cold (mid December), but it didn't feel that bad, especially when the sun was out. Driving down from the craters in dense fog was otherworldly, and we were glad our guide knew the roads well.

The lava tube cave was interesting—Monica had been gradually feeding us information throughout the tour about the geological forces at work, and it was cool to see visible evidence of what we had been taught. The duration of the cave segment was shorter than we had anticipated, but appropriately so. We were given the choice of going deeper in, but we declined.

Due to thick cloud cover, we opted to skip the scenic overlook.

We had read that if you do one thing when you go to Catania, you should go see Mount Etna, and I would agree with that claim. It is a unique experience and well worth the time. Monica was also a great match for us, so we were very happy with our choice of tours.. read less

We originally considered a few other tours with larger groups, but quickly realized we didn't want to get stuck in a group of 30 or 60 people. While those tours also offered a small-group option, it was much too expensive. It was just my wife and me on a private tour with Sebastian in his personal SUV. He spoke English very well, was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Mount Etna, and was very patient answering tons of questions about the geology, history, etc. He communicated really well before the trip (we were originally going to go another day, but he suggested we shift because of the weather, and we really appreciated the flexibility). It was lots of fun hiking during the tour, and we appreciated the chance to sample some local products. Having done this private tour option, this is the way to go if you can book it. Highly recommend! read less

Unbelievable trip to 3000m Unbelievable experience. Guide very knowledgeable. It was very cold in December. First
part of trip was by 4x4 bus and then we track all the way to 3000m.

Well delivered and very cost effective trip We had an excellent 'sunset' trip up the mountain. Thoroughly recommended if you want a 5-6 hour immersion into local culture and vulcanology. Well delivered and very cost effective trip.
